World War II (sometimes abbreviated as WW2) was an international war fought between 1939 and 1945. It comprised of two "theaters" the European and the Pacific. The war began with Germany invaded Poland in 1939. This prompted France and the United Kingdom to declare war on Germany. Ironically British prime minister Neville Chamberlin had recently signed a non aggression pact with the German chancellor, Adolf Hitler. Germany was allied with Italy and Japan. Hitler had signed a non aggression pact with Joseph Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union. France fell to Germany rather quickly. The southern part of France, based in the resort town of Vichy, remained independent but was under German influence. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese Air Force attacked an American navy base at Pearl Harbor, in the Hawaiian Islands. The war in Europe raged on, and Germany began raiding Britain. However the British army fought back, and my 1944, the tide of the war had turned. On D-Day, a massive invasion of continental Europe was planned, were British and American forces stormed Normandy Beach on the coast of France. Italy had abandoned the German cause, and after Hitler committed suicide in a bunker, Germany surrendered. However the war in the Pacific continued for some time after this. Several devastating battles occurred, such as that of Tarawa. The war ended when the Americans dropped the atomic bomb on Japan.
